“Adobo” with a Style

I’m back.. Apologies for not posting a follow-up blog immediately after my previous blah-blah-blah.  I was so busy modifying and personalizing my friendster profile and blog page.  Anyway, let’s get started..

Below is the common cooking method of a typical FIlipino adobo that we are used to.  (Remember the salty-sour taste??)  Thanks to www.cooks.com  in “providing” me this recipe;

CHICKEN ADOBO (FILIPINO VERSION)

1 whole chicken (cut into eighths)
1 whole garlic (chopped)
olive oil or vegetable/corn oil
1 tsp ground black pepper
4 whole black pepper cloves
3 dried bay leaves
1 cup soy sauce
1 cup vinegar
**1 whole lemon (cut into 4)

Remember to wash your chicken very well. We recommend using the lemon (in ingredients) to scrub all over the chicken parts and rub some salt into it as well.

Heat oil and add all of the garlic, and cook until garlic is lightly browned. Add chicken and saute until the chicken is beginning to tenderize.

Add ground black pepper, whole black pepper cloves, soy sauce, and vinegar, and let simmer for 25-35 mins or until chicken is done.

Make sure to add more vinegar or soy sauce until it suits your taste (should be a bit tangy). When chicken is tender, add some 7 up if you want a sweeter taste, and let simmer for 5 more mins.

Now, the “STYLE”…  just add a 1/2 cup of oyster sauce (i prefer Mama Sita Oyster Sauce), and 2 tbspoons of banana ketchup instead of 7-up as mentioned from the original recipe.

There you have it! Chow!!!

Why “Jieduck”?

Jieduck? (dyay-dak)

Duck2_1 Definition.:

A combination of two items, "jie" (an imaginative and original letter combination which does not exists in any dictionary.. i suppose..), and "duck".  Yes, "duck", a feathered animal with webbed feet and have the ability to float on both air and water!

Introduction

Obviuosly, to my close friends and relatives, "jie" was my "personal choice" nickname.  Personal choice?  What do I mean by that?  Formulating a nickname from my six-letter name "ZOSIMO" is quite a "heavy" task.  (Thanks to the old-fashioned calendars that bear suggestive names on every date entry.)  "SIMO"? ‘Nah, sounds like an old-forgotten bolo-swinging Katipunero.  "IMO"?  Not an x-gen nickname, could have been "EMO", but no!  "ZOSIE"?  Aww, so feminine… "ZOSING"?  What!!! I’m not a kid with a lollipop stucked into my mouth or an "ale" who used to sell "ginataan".  What else? "ZOS, ZOSIM, OSI, OSIM, OSIMO, etc.." waaahh!! Perhaps, I need the professional assistance of a champion Scrabble player to come up with a good-sounding nickname using the given six letters!  See what I mean, it’s kind’a hard.

Birth of "Jie"

From childhood to college days, folks and friends used to call me by nicknames mentioned above.  Enough of those nicknames… and the idea of re-inventing a new and unique nickname came to life.

I was inside a jeepney, a fresh-looking young co-ed sat by my side, ahhh!! I can smell her freshness, the scent of her perfume was so pleasing, and INVITING!  I could not stop myself for a second glance at her.  I noticed her books… Yes her books comfortably sitting on her lap!  I envy those books, hmmp, so lucky.  But wait a minute, those books have initials on their edges.  A third and final glance, this time, not at her, but to the BOOKS!  Initials "J.I.E.", all written in bold and black ink.  Maybe, her name is "JUANA I. ELEFANTE", or "JESUSA I. EPILEPSI", I don’t know… I don’t care..

The next day, "Jie Comia" labels were visually present in all my textbooks, notebooks, in all my stuffs!  It was not a tedious job to convince my friends in calling me "Jie".

Arguments:

Jie (to be pronounced as “dyay”, as in die, lie, tie, pie, etc.  Please be careful in pronouncing it…)

Combination

Since then, "Jie" became my "offical" nickname.  Cyber world, emails, instant messagings, site registrations, etc., etc., require to have longer and crack-proof passwords.  Thus, the need to associate a word that would fit my nickname arised.  (Sshh… believe me, my old accounts’ passwords were "jieduck"…, but I changed those, of course!).  Choosing the second word to satisfy my needs was so simple, and not as hard as scrambling the letters of my name…

why "DUCK"?

Duck1_1 Now, taking into consideration all the countless words in the entire universe, why opt for an animal?  Simple, I love animals!  Of all the species in the Animal Kingdom, why duck? Easy, have a look at the very complicated equations below;

o        jie + pig = jiepig, naahh!

o        jie + dog = jiedog, not good…

o        jie + snake = jiesnake, looks ok, but not so.

o        jie + cow = jiecow, oopps, almost there!

o        jie + cat = jiecat, sounds good, but not quite..

o        jie + duck = jieduck! EUREKA!!

That’s it, JIEDUCK!  Get it?

Finale

Duck3_2 Well, that’s all for now.  I’ll be regularly posting blogs about any genre of my interest (and yours as well).  Comments are most welcome here.  So long and God bless us all!
